Weingut Abthof
Info:
Wine and viticulture have played an important role in the Koch family's Abthof winery for over 100 years.
Located around 18 kilometres southwest of Mainz between the hills of Rheinhessen, the Koch family's vines grow on very calcareous marl soil in vineyards that have mostly been cultivated by Cistercian monks since the 13th century. in 2023, Martin Koch and his wife Alina Koch took over the winery from his father Herbert. The young generation has already made its mark on the Abthof winery with a new wine line, new labels and a new logo, among other things.
Classic varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay are cultivated. Nevertheless, the Koch family is passionate about wines of the future - fungus-resistant grape varieties such as Souvignier Gris, Solaris, Muscaris and Monarch. More than 30% of the cultivated vineyard area is already planted with these grape varieties, and the trend is rising.
Another speciality of the Abthof is the historic grape variety Gelber Orleans. In keeping with the tradition of the Cistercian monks, the family is once again cultivating this almost extinct grape variety on the historic vineyards. Both the wine and a vintage sparkling wine variant are available for sale at the winery using the traditional method.
As a family winery, the Koch family wants to bring the potential of creation from the vine to the soil to the vintage with all its flavours and facets into the glass. Numerous awards and a constant presence in the leading wine guides show that they are on the right track.
